Touch & Go

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:55 pm by Joss

Wow! Time sure does fly. I’m still at work, trying to stay ahead of things. Not doing extra good.

Anyhow, after running around a good deal to various plumbers, I got myself a pretty decent (and tall and heavy) armature for my sculpture! I can’t wait to bolt it down and start to create my shape. I spent the weekend drawing and manipulating clay, so I kinda know where I’m going. I should take a few photos and post them as I move ahead.

All of us participating in the upcoming show got together last night at the craft college and shot a bunch of photos. It was a lot of fun.

Well, gotta try and catch some zz’s.

Looking for Scraps

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:50 am by Joss

Hey. I need a few feet of very rusty iron pipes for my sculpture, preferably around 3/4 in. diameter. Anyone has that lying around? The crappier shape the better. Half eaten by corrosion would be best, with a bit of dirt and stuff clinging to them. There’s your chance to unclutter your back 40.

:o)

On to the Next Thing

I belong to a group of artists in Fredericton. We are called Emerge. I like these guys, they’re a great bunch of people–young, dynamic and very creative. We have a show coming up called Equilibrium. The opening is at 5 pm on January 12 at UNB’s Mem Hall. This show will feature the artwork of the late Rick Burns and our response to his work. I realized this week that I have less than one month to prepare!! So I’d better get on with it, as I’m planning to create a large sculpture in plaster, which takes a long time to dry.

Wish me luck!

Last Class Tomorrow

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:48 pm by Joss

Tomorrow I get to present the outcome of my project in drawing class.

For the last year, I’ve been taking one art class at the NB College of Craft and Design per term. This term, I’m taking a third-year class in figure drawing with Linda as my instructor. In the second half of the class, we had to choose one or more artists or styles and develop a personal project.

For my project, I chose to learn more about composition and color, and to get better at handling wet media (ink and watercolor washes, gouache). I picked Richard Diebenkorn and Henri Matisse as my model artists. I read much about them and had a look at their artwork. I must admit that, at first, I was somewhat nonplussed by their more abstract work. But the more I read, studied, and especially copied, the more I started to understand. Now I “get” it much more than I did before, and–more to the point–I’m able to integrate it in my own work.

It’s been a lot of (serious) fun and I can’t wait to learn more.
