Can you believe it? The Grand Theft Auto 4 trailer surfaced into the internets a week ago and people are already up in arms over the game.  A spokesperson for NYC mayor has already voiced their opposition towards the trailer for Rockstar’s new controversial title.

“The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers,” said Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

It was inevitable that opposition to the sequel of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas would face the firing range from anti-violent video game groups, but these comments are weak in my opinion.  Of coarse I do not support injuring or killing police officers in RL , but there are many television shows and films which depict NYC as it being full of criminals, even glorifying violence against police.  I also believe that these television shows reach a much larger audience than the GTA games.  But those television shows are on late at night, a time which children shouldn’t be awake watching them right?  Well, considering that a large percentage of teenagers do in fact have a television in their bedrooms and many of these teens watch late night shows, the fact is, kids are exposed to television shows and films where violence and sex are “glorified”, sometimes even in New York City.

Face it, teenagers are exposed to violent and sexual images every day.  The anti-gamer groups out there are definitely going to bash GTA as its popularity has cursed the title.  But if any government officials want to pick on GTA as a target because the game contains violence against police officers, and depicts NYC as being a zoo full of criminals, then why not go after television shows and movies which in fact, “promote violence” against police officers such as the Sopranos or Gangs of New York.  OK…The Sopranos is set in Jersey, but you get my drift.
