Virgin Music Festival - Toronto 2007
V-Fest rolled into Toronto last weekend (Sept 8th - 9th, 2007) which was the highlight of my year! This festival was timed perfectly as a much deserved vacation week was in order for the both of us (more about the vacation to come). When we arrived at the ferry docks at Bay and Queen’s Quay, we were dumbfounded by the HUGE lineup of people waiting to get onto the ferry.
The lineup spanned about 2 freakin blocks!
I won’t go into detail about every act which I saw so i’ll keep it simple:
Saturday
Birds of Whales - Didn’t see the whole show, but they sounded ok
Matt Costa - Familiar sounding, great singer nice vibe.
KID FREAKIN KOALA! - He made a surprise appearance filling in for Amy Winehouse who decided to check into rehab rather than perform at the festival. I hope she recovers soon. I’ve only seen Kid Koala perform with Bullfrog when they came to the Cellar a couple years ago. He didn’t stay on too long as his records were melting in the hot sun. For the brief time that he was on however, I was certainly in awe. Watching this man work his magic on 3 turntables was a great start to the festival. Hopefully I will see him in the future when it isn’t so bloody hot!
Arctic Monkeys - I tried to enjoy them, but I don’t quite dig their sound.
Interpol - AWESOME. They put on a great opening show for Bjork. It was quite funny when the fucked up a song and started over…the crowd applauded
Bjork - MINDBLOWING. I realize that many people can not stand Bjork’s voice nor her oddities but to hear that woman sing some of those notes blew my mind. She has got to be THE best singer I have ever seen live.
Sunday
DD/MM/YYYY was an energetic fun band which had a lot of personality. I really dig a band that rotates instruments and jokes around with the crowd. They gave away free CDs
Museum Pieces was a great old fashioned 3 piece band which had a nice crisp maritime sound.
Stars were better than I had predicted.
Metric was awesome, way better than i had thought they would be.
The Killers were ok…they just reminded me of why i stopped watching Much Music years ago.
Explosions in the Sky were one of my favorite acts. They have such a great intense sound…i would best describe them as…the sound an orgasm would make if it were music.
Smashing Pumpkins were soooooooooooooo great live! It was my fourth time seeing them and since they’re one of my all time favorite bands, I must admit that they were the main attraction for me. My girlfriend and I found a picnic table that people had just abandoned so we stood on top and had the best spot in the park! Pumpkins played a few older songs as well as mixing a couple songs into one. It was simply amazing.
